Virtual Learning Made EASY for Math and Beyond.

Let’s face it, I'm sure you didn’t have enough time to prepare yourself for remote learning/online learning. You might even be asking yourself which instructional strategies are best suited for online learning?

Covid-19 has changed our world faster than most of us ever thought possible, and you are doing the best you can to make sure the rest of your students’ school year is as effective and happy as possible.

Teaching face-to-face in the classroom is MUCH different from teaching in a virtual classroom, and most of us have had very little training for HOW to do the virtual classroom. So, it is NOT your fault.

Optimizing the virtual classroom is much easier to manage when you know key instructional strategies to support teaching and learning outside of a brick and mortar environment.

Virtual instruction is easier than you might think. Effective and efficient online learning is dependent on 3 components. If you have these 3 components in place, you and your students will be fine.

We usually focus on math instructional strategies and ideas, but these virtual instruction components apply to all possible instructional content areas.

Take a minute to answer the questions in this quiz. It is designed to help you identify where you might need help with your new virtual teaching system AND it will provide you with tips and tricks to help you solve your potential problems.

If you can answer yes to all the following questions, you will be in good shape to provide a positive combination of synchronous and asynchronous virtual learning experiences for you and your students for the remainder of the school year. It is important to provide both synchronous and asynchronous activities for your students because they will not all be able to participate in school on your time like when you are all together in the classroom.

The virtual classroom consists of three components: Communication, Sharing Learning Materials, and Assessment.

Start the quiz to figure out where you are in developing your system of online learning and where your needs might be for your distant learning plan:

Effective Communication

If you answered no to any of these questions, go to Communication Tips.

Share Learning Materials with Students

If you answered no to any of these questions, go to Delivering Course Materials Tips.

Assessment

Communication Tips:

Effective Communication is the most important component that needs a system in place for your virtual learning to go well. Your students need to know what learning is expected and how to communicate questions and ideas with you.

Sharing Learning Materials with Students:

There are many ways to share learning materials with your students, whether you are working with them online or with offline resources.

Assessment:

You can use online tools or traditional paper tools for students to demonstrate their learning. The most important part of the assessment process is that you can provide your students with effective feedback (more than just a score or a vague “good job!”).

The bottom line is that you need to be kind to yourself and your students the next few months.

Online/remote learning takes time and lots of planning, neither of which you have had to prepare for the remainder of the school year.

I hope this short quiz has been of help! I’m looking forward to digging a little deeper into exploring creative math instructional strategy ideas next.

Take care and stay well!

Kindly,

Denine
